SOPHIE
20 something human, fragile but determined. On the run from the Vampire World where she is a slave to the Vampire Lord BELISAR, she steals a Stepping Stone, an ancient technology jealously guarded by the Vampire lords that enables travel across universes and through time. Unused to the jump she suffers amnesia, unable to remember her old life except in flashes or dreams. In our worlds she moves from place to place, always looking over her shoulder, blending in with the humans of this world, always running, pursued by GALEN. Wandering confused in WWII London, she meets HAMPTON, with whom she falls in love. Gradually, she begins to remember more about her old life and with the example of humanity on this world seeks to return and free the slaves of her own. She bears a tattoo on her hand, which marks her as the property of BELISAR. It only shows up when she is fearful or stressed. The Stepoping Stone crystal she carries is drawn to blood and will light up in its presence. The most unique thing about SOPHIE is her blood – it carries a potent viral gene that can create vampirs, cure their sickness – or kill them!
GALEN
Vampire assassin, answering only to Lord BELISAR but with an agenda of his own. Powerful, cruel, determined and ruthless. He thinks nothing of killing those who stand in his way and discovers a vicious pleasure from hunting in a world where humans are in charge and Vampires are creatures of legend and nightmare. His central goal is to capture SOPHIE, whose blood will give him power over his kind, or could destroy them all. He thus works not only to accomplish his mission, but also to increase his own power and abilities. Secretive, perhaps a bit deranged, he follows SOPHIE across time and space and by both day and night. The only way he can be detected is by the clan tattoo on his face, which only shows when he is ready to kill.
HAMPTON
A young doctor of psychiatry who rescues SOPHIE during World War II, when she is brought to him suffering from shock and amnesia. A gentle-hearted and generous man, he falls in love with her and is quickly drawn into the events of her dangerous life. Captured by GALEN, he becomes the first human vampire in our world when GALEN kills him, then changes his mind and sires him instead, needing an ally from our world to help him in the search. But he quickly breaks away from GALEN, hating his half-life state and seeking SOPHIE both from love and from need – believing that her blood could make him human again! Driven by these twin desires, and having to resist the blood lust that now fights for control within him, he moves restlessly from place to place, searching for SOPHIE, and avoiding GALEN, with whom he is sometimes forced to join forces. Endlessly conflicted, there is a world of pain and horror behind his eyes. He uses his vampire powers to help others whenever he can.
BELISAR
Head of the oldest and most powerful Vampire Clan, he rules both his Clan and much of his world like an ancient king. Despotic, powerful and utterly without scruple, he is both feared and adored by his followers. Despite appearing to be only in his twenties he is in fact ancient, perhaps as old as 2000 years! He it was who developed the technology for the Stepping Stones, which he has kept secret from all but a select few. As the series begins he sends GALEN to seek for SOPHIE, whom he not only regards as his personal property, but also believes to be the best source of the blood that can cure vampires who have fallen into catatonia, including his own consort.
